Today's earthquake: 7.3 magnitude tremors hit the island nation of Vanuatu in the Pacific Ocean

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said. The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at a depth of 57 kilometers (35 miles), was 30 kilometers (10 miles) west of Port Vila, the largest city on the island nation.

The Associated Press reported that a 5.5-magnitude aftershock followed near the same location.

However, it was not immediately clear whether the quake had caused any damage, but government websites in Vanuatu went offline in the wake of the quake and phone numbers of police and other public bodies were not contacted. The social media channels of the country's geological hazards agency and the Prime Minister's Office were not updated.

A video posted on social media appears to show a building housing some of Vanuatu's diplomatic missions – including those of Britain, France and New Zealand – with some damage to its building, including twisted windows and debris that collapsed from the walls to the floor.

The US Geological Survey has warned of tsunamis on some coasts of Vanuatu, a group of 80 islands home to about 330,000 people. Waves could reach 0.3 meters to 1 meter (1 to 3 feet) above tide level, the agency said.

Some islands in the low-lying atoll country are 3 feet above sea level.

The US Geological Survey also warned that tsunami waves below 0.3 meters (1 foot) above tide level could be recorded in a number of nearby Pacific island nations including Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.

It was not immediately clear whether it caused any damage.

The authorities in Australia and New Zealand, located in the Pacific Ocean, confirmed that there is no threat of a tsunami occurring in their countries.

The New Zealand Foreign Ministry said 37 New Zealand citizens were registered as being in Vanuatu, though it did not provide further details on their status, the AP reported.
