A 7.3 magnitude earthquake hits Vanuatu

Dramatic videos show the moment the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu was hit by a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday.

A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific island of Vanuatu on Tuesday, causing severe damage to several homes and businesses, including the complex that houses the US Embassy.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake occurred off the coast to the west of the capital, Port Vila, raising fears of dangerous tsunami waves along coastal areas several hundred miles from the epicenter.

According to a Reuters report, at least one person was killed in the earthquake and several others were injured.

US embassy officials said its facility was also damaged and will remain closed until further notice.

“All employees who were in the US Embassy building in Vanuatu are safe and their fate has been accounted for,” X officials said. “While the US Embassy building sustained significant damage, all staff were able to evacuate the building safely.”

Several aftershocks, including a magnitude 5.5, have been reported, and first responders are searching the rubble of collapsed buildings for anyone who may be trapped.
