A massive 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific island of Vanuatu on December 17, causing severe panic and reports of casualties.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 30 kilometers west of Port Vila, the largest city in the country, and at a depth of 57 kilometers. This was followed by a 5.5 magnitude aftershock near the same area, worsening the situation.

The earthquake caused major damage in Port Vila. Video clips circulated on social media showed collapsed buildings, damaged cars, and debris scattered in the streets. One video also showed a damaged building housing several diplomatic missions, including those of the United States, Britain, France and New Zealand.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the structural damage to the building and stated that efforts were underway to hold High Commission staff accountable.

Video of the earthquake shows people and a frightened dog running inside an auto repair shop. The footage went viral, being viewed more than 62,000 times. Social media users commented on the video, which went viral.

Many social media users seemed concerned about the “poor dog.”

“I hope everyone is doing well!” one user wrote while another wrote: “The poor dog was so scared, so scary like a bomb.”

“It looks like there was an aftershock as well, based on the white fridge that appears in the middle and the sliding wall on the right,” another user said.

Tsunami warning

The earthquake led to a tsunami warning being issued, but the authorities withdrew it within two hours. However, communication lines remained down for hours, resulting in a dearth of official updates.

Reports of widespread injuries and damage began to emerge via social media and intermittent phone calls.

Local journalist Dan McGarry, based in Port Vila, said he spoke to a police officer who mentioned at least one death, the Associated Press reported. McGarry also described scenes of chaos outside Villa Central Hospital, where he witnessed three wounded people in distress on stretchers.

The AP added that doctors were working “as quickly as possible” at an outdoor triage center near the emergency ward to manage the growing number of patients.
