California launches first statewide earthquake early warning app | news

CALIFORNIA – In the wake of two recent major earthquakes that rocked California, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and the UC Berkeley Seismic Laboratory announced the expansion of MyShake, the first statewide earthquake early warning system.

The MyShake app, now available as a free download on both Chromebooks and MacOS devices, is designed to give Californians critical seconds to protect themselves before the shaking starts.

The MyShake app played a crucial role during two major earthquakes in early December, sending alerts up to 15 seconds before the shaking started. The app provided up to 15 seconds of advance warning to nearly 470,000 users before the December 5 Humboldt earthquake, and more than 10 seconds of warning to more than 150,000 users before the December 9 Nevada earthquake.
