UN responds to Mozambique cyclone and Vanuatu earthquake

The storm hit over the weekend, affecting at least 184,000 people. According to authorities, about 45 people were killed and 500 others injured, most of them in Cabo Delgado province.

More than 35,000 homes were destroyed or severely damaged. Nearly 50 health centers and about 150 schools were also damaged and no longer functioning.

Reaching families and preventing diseases

The United Nations and its partners are working to mobilize support for the most affected families in the Mikovi district of Cabo Delgado.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters attending his daily briefing in New York that they were able to reach 2,000 families with food, shelter and other basic supplies.

“Mobile medical teams are being deployed in the most affected areas to provide basic health services. Efforts are also underway to combat waterborne diseases by distributing chlorine and water purification materials, as well as providing information on cholera prevention,” he added.

He added that mobile teams have also been deployed to support unaccompanied children or those separated from their families.

Disaster in Mayotte

Tropical Cyclone Chido hit Mozambique after hitting the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean on December 14, leading to “catastrophic consequences” for residents, the World Meteorological Organization said on Tuesday.

The wind speed in Chido reached more than 200 kilometers per hour, with wind gusts exceeding 225 kilometers per hour, accompanied by heavy rains and dangerous waves reaching a height of more than five meters.

It was the strongest storm to hit Mayotte – the archipelago between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique – in at least 90 years, according to the French meteorological service, Meteo France.

Thousands are feared to have died and French President Emmanuel Macron declared a period of national mourning.

The World Meteorological Organization said Chido took an unusual path as the storm circled Madagascar, which could have weakened it.

The tropical cyclone then made landfall over Mozambique on December 15 before weakening, bringing heavy rains there and in neighboring Malawi.

Deadly earthquake in Vanuatu

The United Nations is also responding to the earthquake that struck the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu on Tuesday, killing nine people and injuring more than 200 others, according to authorities.

Humanitarian workers said the situation remained worrying, and a state of emergency was declared for seven days.

Mr. Dujarric said the government has requested international assistance to complement the national response, and the United Nations and its partners are mobilizing resources.

The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is deploying response teams to the region, which includes the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team.

“According to local authorities, the damage is widespread and includes hospitals, residential and public buildings, roads, water tanks and gas pipelines. Many communities have been isolated.”

He listed urgent needs, which include medical supplies, repair of medical structures, mobile medical teams, search and rescue teams equipped with heavy disinfection machinery, as well as safe drinking water.
