Nearly 150 Australian citizens are returning home from Vanuatu

The Australians were repatriated on Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) flights, which arrived this morning.

It is understood that additional assistance will be provided where possible, before the airport reopens in the coming days.

Australian relief teams have also arrived in Vanuatu to assist in search and rescue efforts for people believed to be trapped under buildings in Port Vila.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said search and rescue teams will work with local authorities to help those trapped in collapsed buildings after the “devastating” quake and a medical team will treat the injured.

Support includes a 64-person disaster assistance response team, two dogs, a six-person medical assistance team, nine Australian Federal Police personnel and a five-person DFAT team.

Australian Earth Sciences confirmed that a second aftershock occurred at 5.17 am Australian Eastern time yesterday.

The earthquake reached a magnitude of 6 and occurred at a depth of 72 km.
