Eight schoolgirls were seriously injured after they jumped from a first-floor classroom in panic, believing the vibrations and sounds of the road rolling to be an earthquake in Pakistan's Punjab province, Rescue Service 1122 said on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Tuesday in Jahanian in Khanewal district, about 350 kilometers from Lahore.

According to Rescue 1122, the students, aged between 12 and 14, were present in class at Jahanian Government Girls' High School when they felt strong vibrations and heard a loud noise caused by a roller operating near the school as part of road construction work. .

With no teacher in the classroom, the students became upset, thinking that an earthquake was occurring and that the roof might collapse. While many students rushed to the basement, eight of them jumped from the first floor window, overcome by fear, and were seriously injured.

The injured students were immediately transferred to a nearby hospital, where three of them were reported to be in critical condition.

Lipa Kulthum, who was injured in her arm and leg, recalled the chaotic scene in a conversation with her family at the hospital.

“There were about 20 of us in the classroom when we felt the tremors and heard the loud noise. We thought it was an earthquake and that the ceiling might collapse. In a state of panic, I saw some girls jumping out of the window, and I followed them,” he said.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took notice of the incident and directed the health authorities to ensure that the injured girls get the best possible medical care.
