Judges in the French city of Avignon have sentenced Dominique Pelicot to 20 years in prison for aggravated rape after he drugged and abused his then-wife Gisèle Pelicot and invited dozens of strangers to rape her. Dominique was charged along with 50 other men. Of the 50 defendants found guilty, 46 were found guilty of rape, two of attempted rape and two of sexual assault. For nearly a decade, Gisèle Pelicot was unknowingly sedated by her ex-husband, who admitted to raping her and inviting men she recruited online to have sex in bed at her home, unconscious and unknowing. Although Dominique Pelicot accepted the charges against him, most of the other men on trial denied that what they had done was rape. It was Gisèle's decision to renounce her anonymity and go public with this trial – in her words, “swapping shame from victim to rapist” – that has turned the 72-year-old into a feminist icon.
