More strengthening work is needed for Wellington Railway Station to lose its earthquake-prone rating following a newly released seismic report.

In 2014, Central City Station was rated at 20 percent of the National Building Standard (NBS) following a building assessment.

A 2015 report determined that seismic work would be needed to bring the building to 34% of the NBS area, meaning it would no longer be classified as earthquake-prone.

This work has been carried out over several years, with the final part completed earlier this year.

In November, KiwiRail received a revised detailed seismic assessment that still placed the building at 20 percent NBS and meant more work was needed at the station to raise it to 34 percent.

Work will begin in the first half of 2025, KiwiRail's executive general manager of real estate, Anna Allen, told RNZ.

Allen said he doesn't yet know how much the work will cost.

She said the work is still in the planning stage, but they aim to minimize any disruption it may cause.

“KiwiRail is committed to bringing the building up to the new standards required.”

Greater Wellington Regional Council Chairman Daran Punter said Metlink was aware of the seismic survey and was grateful to KiwiRail for sharing the results.

“The building was considered earthquake-prone before the survey, and a separate independent assessment of its safety risks recently conducted by KiwiRail shows there is now no increased risk of loss of life.”

Ponter said Metlink accepted the results of the assessment and were happy to continue using Wellington Rail Station.

“We look forward to discussing plans to rehabilitate the building with KiwiRail.”

A spokesman for Rail Minister Winston Peters said the minister had not yet been formally briefed on the seismic situation of Wellington Rail Station, but it was understood KiwiRail was developing a plan.

They said it was an operational issue KiwiRail would have to manage.
