The Ministry of Health has confirmed 12 deaths and 210 infections, with 11 surgical cases currently admitted to Vanuatu Central Hospital (VCH). A total of 1,698 individuals have been temporarily displaced. Eleven centers are housing 1,206 people based on assessments, while others are staying with 31 host families. A Pacific Humanitarian Air Service (PHAS) flight landed in Port Vila today, carrying fast teams from UN agencies and humanitarian partners, along with relief items as part of humanitarian cargo. The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) is fully operational at its temporary location, with national collective response efforts continuing, now supported by PHT and UNDAC staff on the ground. Vanuatu Central Hospital (VCH) is urgently requesting coordinated surge support and procurement of essential medical supplies to meet critical needs. Port Vila International Airport is set to officially reopen on Sunday 22 December, with commercial flights resuming.

Situation overview

The situation in Vanuatu remains critical following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred on 17 December 2024. The state of emergency remains in place, and a seven-day general curfew from 6pm to 6am in the Nambatu District will end by 24 December. The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) and National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) continue to urge the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks continue.

Infrastructure has been damaged extensively, with landslides blocking road access in Efate and the outer islands. Port Vila International Airport is set to reopen to commercial flights tomorrow, with the runway infrastructure certified safe and jet fuel confirmed uncontaminated. However, access to the seaport remains closed.

Telecommunications services are gradually being restored, but needs remain. Domestic mobile connections are working but experiencing intermittent disruptions, while Vodafone's international phone services (voice and SMS) remain stable. However, internet services remain down in Efate, complicating coordination efforts. Most banking services have been restored in Port Vila, although some ATMs remain non-functional due to lack of access to power. Commercial services remain limited, with only one supermarket reopened in the Nambatu area.
