United Nations forces mobilize their forces after the second earthquake in Vanuatu

A state of emergency remains in place across the island nation, and a seven-day dusk-to-dawn curfew is set to end in parts of Port Vila on December 24. It was also reported that the access road to the seaport was closed.

The second earthquake has exacerbated concerns, as more information on its impact is still awaited, including the reopening of Port Vila Airport to commercial flights.

Human needs

As of Saturday night (local time), more than 80,000 people had been affected by Tuesday's earthquake, with nearly 1,700 people temporarily displaced. Eleven evacuation centers are housing more than 1,200 people, while others are staying with host families.

Immediate needs include access to clean water, food and health care, as communities face increasing risks of waterborne diseases.

Health services are also reported to be under severe pressure, with Vanuatu Central Hospital requiring essential medical supplies and coordinated support to fill critical gaps.

Coordinated response

In response to the escalating crisis, a humanitarian flight coordinated by the UN World Food Programme's Pacific Humanitarian Air Service landed in Port Vila on Saturday, transporting rapid support teams from UN agencies, humanitarian partners and relief supplies.

Agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), are working alongside national authorities to support the response.

UNFPA set up maternity tents in a Vienna hospital, while UNICEF set up four tents to manage the influx of patients and deployed child protection teams to support families and healthcare workers.

UNICEF also delivered bladder water tanks to VCH to ensure continued access to clean water.

The World Food Program has deployed emergency communications specialists to restore crippled communications networks that are essential for coordinating relief efforts. It is also working with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and partners to assess food security needs.

In addition, UNOSAT conducts satellite damage assessments to guide resource allocation and prioritize affected areas.

Humanitarian partners, including MSF, are also providing assistance on the ground alongside national response teams.

Timely response is crucial

Alpha Bah, Director of the World Food Programme's Multi-Country Office in the Pacific, based in Fiji, stressed the need for a timely response to affected families.

“We are saddened by the loss of lives and destruction of property caused by this earthquake. This concerted effort is crucial to ensure that people affected by the earthquake receive essential and timely assistance,” he added.

“WFP is committed to supporting the National Disaster Management Office and other national institutions, and we will continue to intensify our efforts to strengthen Vanuatu’s response to this crisis.”
