An earthquake with an epicenter in the Northern Cape shook Cape Town during the early hours of Sunday.

More than 200 people in Cape Town recorded their experiences in an online survey titled “Did You Feel It” on the United States Geological Survey webpage.

The 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurred 101 kilometers west of Brandvlei, a small town in the Northern Cape province.

The Earth Sciences Council confirmed in a statement the earthquake occurred: “Preliminary results show that the earthquake and aftershocks recorded a local magnitude of approximately 5.3 and 2.9, respectively, as recorded by the South African Seismic Network.”

First River Mother Michelle Lehnert, 45, says she got scared when she woke up feeling her bed moving.

“It was between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., and I felt like my bed was moving from front to front,” Lehnert says. At first, I thought my husband wanted to do something in the middle of the night, but then I saw him sleeping.

“I heard the chandeliers making noise and I was so fussed, I didn't know if there was a ghost or a goose in the house.

“I heard the dogs barking frantically and realized there must be something outside. I woke up my husband, but he didn’t feel the bed move.”

Lehnert says she woke up the next morning confused and questioned her husband.

She added: “I asked him, ‘Do you remember that I woke you up? I was questioning my sanity and after doing some research, we realized what was the matter. “It was scary.”

Independent geologist Dr. Gideon Gruenewald says the epicenter of the quake was 10 kilometers underground.

He added that the intensity of the thunder was 5.5 on the Richter scale, or about 150 times stronger than the sound of normal thunder. He added that no damage was recorded.

“The ground motion is very important because it follows a similar event in the springbok a week earlier,” Groenewald says.

“This may be an indication of ground movement in a very ancient fault zone in Namaqualand, which is interesting.”
