A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Cuba
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook eastern Cuba in the early hours of Monday, December 23.
The quake was felt primarily in the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo, although reports of possible monitoring were also received from Camagüey and Ciego de Avila, according to the National Center for Earthquake Research (CENAIS).
The head of the National Seismological Authority, Dr. Enrique Arango Arias reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 35 kilometers southwest of the city of Chiverico, the capital of the municipality of Guama, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers, which exacerbated its impact in the region.
Preliminary data issued by CENAIS placed the earthquake at coordinates 19.77 degrees north and longitude 76.61 degrees west.
The official report indicated that there was “minor damage” in the town of Providencia in Granma province as a result of the earthquake.
In a subsequent video appearance, Arango Arias clarified that the earthquake that occurred this morning “is not an aftershock of the one that occurred south of Belón, in Granma,” about a month and a half ago.
The specialist noted that 170 aftershocks have been reported so far from the event that occurred this morning, and described them as “normal.”
Impact on residents and damage reports
Although no deaths or injuries have been reported so far, social media posts have already shown some damage.
Journalist José Ortiz Bennett reported on social media that the balcony of the José María Heredia School partially collapsed in Manzanillo, Granma province.

Many social media users described the intensity and duration of the tremor.
This earthquake occurs less than two months after two strong tremors of 6.0 and 6.7 magnitude occurred on November 10, south of Belon in Granma.
According to the National Seismological Service, more than 8,000 aftershocks have been recorded since then, of which 137 were noticeable.
CENAIS urges the public to stay informed through official channels.
The authorities stress the importance of following the recommendations of civil protection agencies in confronting these events.
This tremor confirms the seismically active nature of eastern Cuba, an area historically vulnerable to such phenomena due to its geographical location.
