50 families in Bajura were forced to live under tents after the earthquake

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter at Gotri in Bajura on Saturday morning, caused massive damage in Jagannath Rural Municipality. According to local authorities, 108 homes were destroyed, while 460 other homes were partially damaged. Several walls of houses in nearby areas also cracked.

Kali Bahadur Shahi, the head of the rural municipality, said that District 5 in Jagannath witnessed the destruction of 46 houses, and another 86 houses were partially damaged. Gauri Sarki, head of the department, said 50 families in the hard-hit Darji settlement are currently living in tents because their homes are uninhabitable. These families use tents provided by the Red Cross and obtained from local sources.

In other neighborhoods, Ward 2 reported 24 homes completely damaged and 93 homes partially damaged, while Ward 6 saw 18 homes destroyed and 104 homes partially damaged. Ward 4 recorded 10 homes destroyed and 122 homes partially damaged, while Ward 3 reported 10 homes completely destroyed and 44 homes partially damaged.

Public infrastructure was also damaged, with 24 schools, 11 health centers and all six office buildings affected, according to the local disaster management office.

Meghnath Badia, chief district officer of Bajura, said efforts were underway to collect accurate data on the damage. He said additional relief materials would be provided after receiving more details.

“We have sent 50 pieces of tarpaulins and blankets to Jagannath Rural Municipality,” he said. “We will make further arrangements after receiving detailed information.”

Frequent earthquakes in Sudurpaschim County have alarmed residents. According to the National Center for Earthquake Monitoring and Research, the region has witnessed 37 earthquakes since October 2022, with Bajura alone recording 16 earthquakes during this period.

Experts warn of possible large earthquakes in the region.
