Earthquake activity will increase due to glacial retreat

A recent study by Colorado State University (CSU) provides compelling evidence that climate change can affect the frequency of earthquakes. The research adds to a growing body of work suggesting that shifts in climate can directly affect the seismic cycle.

The study focused on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado, where an active fault runs along the western edge of the mountain range. The researchers discovered that during the last ice age, the weight of the glaciers suppressed crevasse activity.

However, as the ice melted, the fault experienced increased slip, suggesting that seismic activity along these faults could rise in response to glacial retreat.

“Climate change is occurring at a much faster rate than we see in the geological record,” said first author Sissy Hurtado, who conducted the study as part of her master's thesis at Colorado State University.

“We see this in rapid mountain glacial retreats in Alaska, the Himalayas and the Alps. In many of these regions, there are also active tectonics, and this work shows that as the climate changes ice and water loads, tectonically active regions may experience more frequent fault movements and earthquakes due to stress conditions.” rapidly changing.

Linking climate and earthquake activity

While it is well-established that tectonic shifts affect climate – for example, through the rise of mountains that alter atmospheric circulation and precipitation – research linking climate shifts to tectonic activity is still scarce.

The CSU study is among the few that shows how climate change can directly affect seismic processes.

“We've been able to model these processes for a while, but it's hard to find examples in nature,” said Sean Galen, associate professor of geosciences at California State University and lead author of the study. “This is compelling evidence. It suggests that the atmosphere and the solid Earth have close connections that we can measure in the field.”

A closer look at the Sangre de Cristo fault

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, once covered by glaciers during the last Ice Age, provided an ideal setting to study the relationship between glacier retreat and crevasse activity.

Using remote sensing and field data, the researchers reconstructed the extent of ancient glaciers and calculated the weight of these ice masses exerted on the crevasse. They then measured how much the crack shifted over time.

The analysis revealed that fault slip rates have been five times faster since the glaciers melted compared to when the region was glacial. This acceleration indicates that as the glaciers melted, the fault experienced a “rebound,” catching up with the rate of background tectonic motion.

“It's basically like a little lever that adjusts the rate at which the fault moves, but that long-term rate is determined by the base rate of tectonic processes,” Gallen explained.

Implications for seismic risk assessment

The findings have major implications for understanding what drives earthquake activity and assessing seismic risk in areas experiencing rapid glacial retreat or significant water loss.

“This work suggests that the time of recurrence will not necessarily be periodic,” Gallen said. “You can have periods of time where you have a bunch of earthquakes in quick succession and a lot of time where you don't have any earthquakes.”

The study results may help improve models used to reconstruct prehistoric seismic records and estimate recurrence periods of active faults. By taking into account hydrological processes, such as the retreat of glaciers, over geologic time, seismologists can improve risk assessments for tectonically active areas.

Glacial retreat and seismic activity

The research was based on a public database of high-resolution elevation data, which served as the basis for understanding fault displacement.

Hurtado and Galen also conducted field surveys using high-resolution GPS instruments to supplement elevation data and measure fault displacement. The timing of fault movement was determined based on the age of sedimentary deposits near the fault.

The researchers noted that the Sangre de Cristo Mountains provided a unique opportunity to study the interaction between glacier retreat and tectonics. This range is part of the Rio Grande fault, which has a known backslip rate, providing a baseline for comparison.

Earth's climate and tectonic systems

As glaciers continue to retreat rapidly in regions such as Alaska, the Himalayas, and the Alps, the CSU team's findings are a preview of how other crevasses adjacent to glaciers will respond to a warming climate.

The study highlights the interconnection between Earth's climate and tectonic systems, and highlights the potential for climate-driven changes to increase seismic activity in tectonically active regions.

By shedding light on this relationship, the researchers hope to deepen understanding of seismic hazards and encourage further study of how climate change shapes Earth's dynamic systems. “This is a crucial step in understanding how climate and tectonics interact,” Hurtado concluded.

The study was published in the Geology Journal.

What Are The Main Benefits Of Comparing Car Insurance Quotes Online

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 24, 2020, / Compare-autoinsurance.Org has launched a new blog post that presents the main benefits of comparing multiple car insurance quotes. For more info and free online quotes, please visit https://compare-autoinsurance.Org/the-advantages-of-comparing-prices-with-car-insurance-quotes-online/ The modern society has numerous technological advantages. One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
