A Turkish court convicts a hotel owner and an architect in an earthquake trial

Agence France-Presse reported that a Turkish court on Wednesday sentenced the owner and engineer of a hotel in which 72 people died after it collapsed following two earthquakes last year to more than 18 years in prison.

Among the dead were 26 members of the school volleyball team from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Grand Isaias Hotel in Adiyaman collapsed after the twin earthquakes in February 2023 that killed more than 55,000 people in Türkiye.

The court in Adiyaman sentenced hotel owner Ahmet Bozkurt to 18 years and five months in prison on charges of “causing the death or injury of more than one person through willful negligence,” the official Anatolia news agency reported.

Anadolu said that his son, Mehmet Fatih Bozkurt, was sentenced to 17 years and four months in prison, and architect Erdem Yilmaz was sentenced to 18 years and five months in prison on the same charges.

A team from Agence France-Presse saw the hotel completely leveled.

The regional government announced national mobilization and chartered a private plane to join the search and rescue efforts for members of the volleyball team.

Speaking to reporters after the ruling, TRNC Prime Minister Unal Östel said the sentences were too lenient and that they would take the case to a higher court.

“The hotel owners did not receive the punishment we expected,” Ostell said. “But despite this, everyone – from those responsible for building the hotel to the architect – was judged. This made us at least partly happy.

The hotel's collapse sparked strong criticism of the government because it allowed the construction of a building without obtaining the necessary permits.
