A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Agusan del Sur

MANILA, Philippines – A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook Agusan del Sur province at 6:26 pm on Thursday, December 26, Phivolcs reported.

In Phivolcs' second earthquake bulletin, state seismologists traced the epicenter to Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, where the quake struck 12 kilometers below the surface.

Phivolcs attributed the earthquake to movements of tectonic plates along fault lines or plate boundaries.

The 5.3 magnitude earthquake is classified as “moderate” on the earthquake intensity scale, and is usually felt by many but causes only minor damage.

Earlier, Phivolcs reported that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 5.6.

Such is the intensity that has been reported in different parts of Mindanao.

Phivolcs also warned of potential damage and aftershocks due to the strength of the quake.

Government response

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said in a statement that the force “raises concerns about possible aftershocks and damage in the area.”

The agency is also currently assessing the effects of the earthquake.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center (NDRRMOC) issued an alert and emergency warning message to inform the public about the earthquake.

The agency is also coordinating with Phivolcs and OCD Caraga to assist local government units in monitoring the situation.

The OCD said they will publish a progress report once more information is available.

She added, “The authorities urge residents to remain alert in anticipation of aftershocks and to follow safety protocols.”
