On Christmas Day, many Helsinki residents were stunned by the earthquake. Yle reported that police received multiple reports of a loud explosion in the Käpylä area.

Toni Vikulainen, a seismologist from the University of Helsinki, said the quake measured 1.1 on the Richter scale – the strongest earthquake ever recorded in Helsinki.

Vikolainen stated that citizen reports came from areas such as Vallela, Capella and Haga.

He added: “If this had happened in the Baltic Sea or in a remote land area, there may not have been any reports from citizens.”

The earthquake shook the ground around 6:30 pm and lasted less than a minute.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Kapila Olympic Village, near the intersection of Makilankatu and Kuskalanti.

The exact cause of the earthquake is not yet clear, but at this stage, it does not appear to be caused by human activity.

According to Vikulainen, natural earthquakes in Finland are caused by factors such as the expansion of the Atlantic Ocean, land elevation, and local movements of water masses in the rock.

Residents reported a loud explosion

The quake was clearly heard and felt by residents of Kapila, near the northern tip of Maklankatu, according to Yle reporter Otso Karhu, who was at the site.

“The sudden loud explosion cut through the traffic noise. I felt tremors in my legs and body. I wasn’t going to fall because of it, but I was definitely startled.”

Seismologist Vikolainen explains that it is normal to hear the sound of an earthquake. He added that the seismic activity occurred near the surface, which is why the sound was clearer.

“If it had a deeper source, the sound from an earthquake of the same size would likely have been more muffled.”

Rare occurrence

According to Vikulainen, about a hundred earthquakes are detected annually in Finland. For example, Helsinki experienced two earthquakes of less than magnitude 1 in September.

Vikolainen notes that an earthquake like the one that occurred on Christmas Day has not been felt in the Helsinki metropolitan area for more than a decade.

The most recent natural earthquake in the region with a magnitude greater than one occurred in 2013. This 1.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Espoo.

The most significant earthquake in modern history occurred in the vicinity of Mantsala in 2011 with a magnitude of 2.6.
