A 4.0 magnitude earthquake was reported off Vancouver Island on Friday

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Vancouver Island early Friday morning, less than 48 hours after a 4.8-magnitude quake struck in roughly the same location on Christmas Day.

The latest quake was reported at 2:12 a.m., about 192 kilometers west of Port Hardy, according to the Canadian Earthquake Service.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, and a tsunami is not expected, according to the agency.

“There are no reports of damage, and no damage is expected,” Earthquakes Canada's summary of the event said, adding that the quake was not felt.

The Christmas Day quake occurred just before 1:40 p.m. at roughly the same location and depth, according to the Canadian Earthquake Service.

The area off the coast of Vancouver Island known to researchers as the Juan de Fuca Mountain Range regularly experiences seismic activity of magnitude 4 to 6.

In July of this year, after a series of dozens of earthquakes in just a few hours, Andrew Schaeffer, a seismologist with the Geological Survey of Canada, told CTV News that such incidents are “business as usual” in the region.

“These earthquakes are common on the hills, with historical magnitudes of about 6, but 4s and 5s are relatively common,” he said in an emailed statement at the time.

“Due to the type of earthquakes, these earthquakes do not typically produce any type of tsunami, and we do not expect them to be felt, let alone cause damage, on Vancouver Island.”
