An earthquake and tsunami hit Italy in 1908 and Indonesia in 2004

A look back at local, national and world events through the Deseret News archive.

On December 28, 1908, a major earthquake followed by a tsunami destroyed the Italian cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria, killing at least 70,000 people.

According to reports, the earthquake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale in the Strait of Messina, which separates Sicily from the Italian mainland. It is still considered the deadliest earthquake in European history.

Even in 1908, news of the disaster spread around the world, with the Deseret News and other newspapers covering the global event.

Earthquakes followed by tsunamis have always presented a challenge to coastal communities. Coming during the holidays adds to the devastation.

Twenty years ago, on December 26, 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami with waves up to 100 feet high, killing an estimated 230,000 people.

On March 11, 2011, a powerful tsunami reaching speeds of about 500 mph and waves 10 meters high swept across the east coast of Japan, killing more than 18,000 people.

Here are some stories from the Deseret News archives about earthquake and tsunami strikes and how people are coping:

“A huge tsunami hit 20 years ago. This is how the world came together to help the victims.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
