Earthquake hits Hicksville, first in Defiance County | Local news

The first recorded earthquake in Defiance County occurred in Hicksville Sunday morning.

The quake occurred at 6:46 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The 2.9 magnitude earthquake occurred about a half-mile southwest of Hicksville at a depth of about 6 miles.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' earthquake database had no records of an earthquake in Defiance County as of Sunday afternoon.

According to USGS data, the event was felt throughout northwest Ohio into northeastern Indiana. Many residents in Williams County reported feeling the earthquake, which was also felt by residents of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The USGS map also indicates that the quake was felt as far away as Cincinnati, 150 miles from the epicenter.

According to the USGS, most of North America east of the Rocky Mountain experiences infrequent earthquakes, with much of the region between the mountain and the Atlantic Ocean going years without an earthquake large enough to be felt.
