If you were awake on a Sunday morning from an otherwise calm slumber, you are probably one of the 103,869 people who felt the earthquake that originated in Sparta, North Carolina.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed a 5.1-magnitude earthquake on Sunday, August 9, with its epicenter in Sparta, North Carolina, with reports of tremors coming from parts of Virginia and South Carolina. The earthquake occurred at 8:07 am near the borders of North Carolina and Virginia.

Vanessa Reed Martin, a resident of Lunenburg County, said she felt the earthquake.

“I definitely felt it,” Martin said, “I was sitting in front of the computer, and at 8:08 am I looked at the computer clock to remember the time, and I felt my seat moving gently and the desk with my arms resting on.”

In Victoria, Sherrill McKinney was sitting on her sofa when she felt an earthquake.

According to the USGS, by 2 p.m. Sunday, the number of earthquake reports had risen to over 90,000, with those closest to the epicenter reporting strong to very strong shaking, while others far away reported mild to light shaking.

The US Geological Survey said large earthquakes are relatively uncommon in the immediate surrounding of the Sparta, North Carolina earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, earthquakes that moderately destroy inner Carolina every few decades. Small earthquakes are felt once every one or two years.

The largest earthquake to hit the East Coast recently was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that hit the Mineral on August 23, 2011.
