Japan is marking one year since the powerful Noto earthquake, and the rebuilding process is still slow

Japan on Wednesday marked one year since a powerful earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in central Japan, killing at least 500 people, including those who succumbed to health problems afterward, as efforts continue toward full recovery in the worst-hit areas. .

About 21,000 residents of Ishikawa Prefecture, which faces the Sea of Japan, were still evacuated or staying in temporary housing as of late December, as the process of restoring infrastructure and demolishing collapsed homes remains incomplete.

The Ishikawa Prefectural Government will hold a ceremony later in the day in Wajima, one of the areas hardest hit by the quake, to offer condolences to the victims and pledge reconstruction efforts.

The area, which was struck by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake at 4:10pm on New Year's Day last year, was also hit by heavy rains in September, hampering post-quake recovery efforts and increasing the number of evacuees.

Of the 504 deaths reported as of Friday, 228 people died in Ishikawa Prefecture in the quake. The remaining 276 deaths in Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama Prefectures are believed to have resulted from deteriorating health conditions, which in some cases were linked to the stress of evacuation.

Some deaths are also due to limited access to electricity and water, as well as service interruptions in medical institutions, according to local authorities.

The death toll is expected to rise further, with about 200 cases awaiting review to be recognized as quake-related deaths, according to the municipalities involved.

The earthquake caused more than 150,000 homes to completely or partially collapse in Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Fukui Prefectures.

The local government said all temporary housing for those affected was completed on December 23 in Ishikawa Prefecture, but this was four months behind schedule due to increased demand and delays caused by September rains.

The Ishikawa Prefectural Government established 6,882 temporary homes in 10 municipalities, housing 12,092 people. Of these, 64 percent reside in the cities of Wajima and Suzu.

The local economy of the region, known as a popular tourist destination for its fresh seafood, hot spring spas and traditional artwork, including ceramics, has also suffered. A fire destroyed a historic market in Wajima, destroying about 240 buildings.

A total of 88 Japanese-style hotels and inns, or ryokans, in Ishikawa partially or completely collapsed, while 100 tourist facilities were damaged in Ishikawa, Toyama and Niigata prefectures, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
