Japan celebrates the one-year anniversary of the massive Noto Peninsula earthquake

Wajima, Ishikawa (Jiji Press) – Japan on Wednesday marked the first anniversary of a massive earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, killing more than 500 people.

Most of those affected by the disaster have returned to their homes or moved into temporary accommodation, and are working to rebuild their lives.

The death toll from the 7.6-magnitude quake has reached 504, according to data through Friday from the Ishikawa prefectural government and other sources.

Among them, 228 people died from direct causes, such as exposure to the tsunami and building collapse, while 276 people lost their lives from indirect causes, including those who died during the evacuation.

Municipalities on the Noto Peninsula were also hard hit by torrential rains in September last year.

The number of people evacuated since the January 1, 2024 earthquake, which peaked at about 34,000 at one point, has fallen to 28. A total of 6,882 temporary housing units for those affected by the earthquake were completed by December.

The 221 evacuees from the heavy rains are expected to start moving into temporary housing in late March this year.

Among the major roads cut off by the quake, the Noitsu Expressway connecting Ishikawa and neighboring Toyama Prefecture, and National Route 249 in Ishikawa were fully reopened in July and December 2024, respectively. The problem of water outages has been almost completely solved.

The work to remove the destroyed and damaged buildings is expected to be completed using public funds in October 2025.

Meanwhile, disaster-affected municipalities in Ishikawa recorded significant population outflows.

Wajima City saw its population decline by approximately 9% in the 11 months after the strong earthquake. In particular, 18% of its population under the age of 40 has left the city.

According to the Ishikawa Prefectural Government, about 80% of disaster-hit businesses in six municipalities in the Noto area have resumed operations. But some are reluctant to fully resume operations due to uncertainty about the progress of post-disaster reconstruction and the lack of successors.

The reconstruction of the region faces a range of challenges, such as restoring damaged agricultural land and rebuilding damaged accommodation facilities.

On Wednesday, the Ishikawa Prefectural Government is scheduled to hold a memorial ceremony, where about 460 participants, including relatives of the victims and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, will pray for victims of the quake and torrential rain.
