A 2.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Newfoundland kicks off the new year

While New Year's Day is often home to some rumbles and explosions, the shaking feeling across central Newfoundland on Wednesday wasn't due to fireworks.

Seismology Canada says a small earthquake occurred at 2:11 p.m. ET, off the coast of the island in Notre Dame Bay, between Port Fortune and Port Moreton.

Although people across central Newfoundland reported feeling the quake, there appeared to be no major impacts.

A spokesman for Earthquakes Canada said: “The quake measured 2.8, which is big enough to be felt but too small to cause any damage.”

According to the earthquake monitoring group, the quake's epicenter occurred about 19 kilometers west of Twengate, 33 kilometers northeast of Lewisporte or about 85 kilometers northeast of Gander.
