A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shakes Lake County

The quake occurred just after 6:30 p.m. south of Clearlake

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Lake County just after 6:30 p.m. on New Year's Day, and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

According to the USGS, the quake's epicenter was about 2.5 miles northwest of the community of Cobb, south of Clearlake.

The quake occurred at a depth of just over half a mile, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake's magnitude was initially rated at 4.5, then revised to 4.7 about half an hour later.

The USGS says force measures the energy released by the source of an earthquake. It replaces the old Richter scale.

Earthquakes between magnitude 2.5 and 5.4 are often felt, but rarely cause significant damage, according to the Michigan Institute of Technology. Earthquakes below magnitude 2.5 are rarely felt by most people.

Sudden and rapid earthquakes can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides or avalanches.

The National Weather Service issued an alert saying a tsunami is not expected as a result of Wednesday's shaking.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in the area. On December 11, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck the same area, shaking windows as far south as San Jose.
