Another earthquake shakes parts of New York State

Less than two weeks after a small earthquake was felt in parts of New York, a slightly larger quake has occurred, according to seismologists. On December 22, the US Geological Survey said an earthquake occurred near Lovell, New York. The earthquake tracking website reported that the magnitude of this previous tremor reached 1.7 on the Richter scale.

However, scientists say New York State can experience minor earthquakes almost frequently, so these recent tremors don't necessarily mean something much larger is on the way.

An earthquake struck an area less than four miles outside Fort Covington, the US Geological Survey reported. PIX11 reports that the quake was felt around 12:54 a.m. Wednesday. The earthquake was recorded at a magnitude of 2.4 on the Richter scale.

There is also the Western Quebec Seismic Zone, which can produce larger earthquakes that can be felt up and down the East Coast of the United States, especially relative to its neighbors immediately south in the Empire State.
