An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hits the Wainthal area and its surrounding areas

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Oasis-Vental and surrounding areas at 2:01 a.m. tonight, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Many area residents reported feeling tremors, indicating that the earthquake was widespread.

This earthquake is the strongest recorded in recent days among a series of seismic activities that occur mainly in the Awash-Viental region. In addition, a minor volcanic eruption was reported today in Dolissa Woreda, Afar Region.

According to the Geology Hub, a research organization that monitors volcanic activity and earthquakes, recent tectonic movements could increase the likelihood of volcanic eruptions. The organization indicated that a significant deformation of the ground had been observed in the area since September, with the authorities evacuating about 700 people as a precautionary measure.

In view of the ongoing seismic activities, the authorities are calling for increased vigilance. More than 10,000 people residing in high-risk areas may need to urgently evacuate, according to Geology Hub, which has reportedly reported these concerns to the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the US Geological Survey.
