A series of earthquakes in Ethiopia prompts evacuations

Evacuations began in Ethiopia on Saturday after a series of earthquakes, the strongest of which was a 5.8-magnitude tremor that struck the remote region north of the Horn of Africa country.

The earthquakes were concentrated in the largely rural regions of Afar, Oromia and Amhara after months of intense seismic activity.

No injuries have been reported so far.

The Ethiopian Government Communications Service said about 80,000 people are living in the affected areas and the most vulnerable are being moved to temporary shelters.

“Earthquakes are increasing in strength and frequency of occurrence,” she said in a statement, adding that experts had been sent to assess the damage.

The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Committee said 20,573 people had been evacuated to safer areas in Afar and Oromia, out of a total of more than 51,000 people “at risk.”

The agency said in a statement that plans are underway to transfer more than 8,000 people in Oromia “in the coming days.”

The latest earthquake, measuring 4.7, occurred just before 12:40 pm (0940 GMT), about 33 kilometers north of the town of Metehara in Oromia, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The quakes damaged homes and threatened to spark a volcanic eruption on the previously dormant Mount Dovan, near Seginto in the Afar region in the northeast of the country.

The crater stopped emitting plumes of smoke, but nearby residents left their homes in panic.

Earthquakes are common in Ethiopia due to its location along the Great Rift Valley, one of the most seismically active regions in the world.

Experts said that the tremors and explosions were caused by the expansion of tectonic plates under the Great Rift Valley.
