A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hits Ethiopia with a volcanic eruption

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Ethiopia on Friday, coinciding with a volcanic eruption after several months of increased seismic activity, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), citing foreign media.

The quake, which occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles), occurred about 55 kilometers (34 miles) northwest of the city of Aspe Teferi, the EMSC said.

No injuries have been reported so far.

A nearby volcano also erupted after months of intense seismic activity, according to local media.

Aden Bella, a local official, told Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) that the volcanic eruption occurred at 5:30 a.m. Friday (1430 GMT) near Segintu in the Afar region in the country's northeast.

Bella added that the crater has stopped emitting smoke, but lava is still flowing from the volcano. He added that people and livestock were evacuated, without giving numbers.

Since late last September, the US Geological Survey has recorded more than 67 earthquakes in the region, especially in the Fantal region, which is part of the Great Rift Valley, according to the Addis Ababa standard.

Residents of the affected areas told the newspaper that more than 30 houses collapsed, and the tremors became more frequent and more violent.

One resident told the newspaper: “Houses are collapsing day after day.”
