The Australian Geosciences Authority records three earthquakes near Broken Hill within 30 hours

While the people of Broken Hill are accustomed to the sounds of daily mine explosions occurring around the clock, this was different.

In less than 30 hours, three separate earthquakes were recorded within 100 kilometers of the remote mining town in far western New South Wales.

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake struck the area shortly before midnight on Friday, followed by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake at 2.50pm on Saturday and a 3.3 magnitude earthquake at 5.30am today.

The Australian Geosciences Authority said the series of earthquakes was highly unusual.

Its data shows the Broken Hill area has been hit by 18 earthquakes greater than 2.5 magnitude in the past 85 years.

Phil Cummins, senior seismologist at the Australian Geosciences Centre, said despite their proximity, it was difficult to determine whether the quakes were related.

“You can see why it seems a bit unusual to get those three in such quick succession,” he said.

“But I still think that because of the distance between these earthquakes, there is no reason for there to be a connection between them.”

Geoscience Australia has received more than 70 reports of earthquakes from members of the public.

Earthquakes can cause severe damage to buildings and infrastructure, trigger tsunamis, and reshape the Earth's surface with their force.

Mr Cummins said earthquakes were generally caused by the slow build-up of tectonic pressure from plates thousands of kilometers away.

“It moves through the Australian crust, and it causes a very gradual build-up of pressure, and eventually that pressure can exceed the strength fault within the crust,” he said.

Cummins said there was a “small possibility” of more earthquakes in the short term, and he would be monitoring the area closely for future activity.

A Broken Hill Mines spokesman said workers at the site followed procedures during seismic activity.

The spokesman said no damage was identified and operations were not affected.

While mining is known to cause earthquakes, the spokesman said there was no connection.

The Australian Geosciences Authority said more detailed monitoring would be needed to determine the source of the events.
