Earthquakes force evacuations in Ethiopia

Ethiopia experienced a series of earthquakes on Saturday, including a 5.8-magnitude quake, causing panic and widespread evacuations in remote northern regions of the country.

The earthquakes affected rural areas in Afar, Oromia and Amhara, after months of increasing seismic activity, according to Agence France-Presse.

Nearly 2,000 people have already been displaced, with efforts underway to provide temporary shelter to the most vulnerable among the 80,000 residents in the affected areas, the Ethiopian Government Communications Service reported.

It issued a statement warning of the increase in the frequency and intensity of earthquakes.

“The occurrence of earthquakes is increasing in size and frequency,” she said in a statement, adding that experts had been sent to assess the damage.

The 4.7-magnitude earthquake was the latest in this series, occurring shortly before noon local time near Metehara in Oromiya.

The tremors also raised fears of a volcanic eruption on Mount Dovan in the Afar region, which was previously dormant.

Although the volcano stopped emitting smoke, local residents were evacuated in panic.

Ethiopia's location along the Great Rift Valley, one of the most tectonically active regions in the world, makes it vulnerable to earthquakes.

Geologists attribute the current activity to the expansion of tectonic plates beneath the region.

No injuries have been reported so far, but authorities continue to closely monitor the situation.
