California Geological Survey releases new tsunami maps for Humboldt County
The California Geological Survey has released new tsunami hazard maps and evacuation area for Humboldt County.
“We have new scientific information and better computer modeling which has led to better predictions about whether or not the earthquake will create tsunamis, and which path one can take. State geologist Steve Bohlin said in the statement that this new information can help local governments and response providers. For emergencies to update community evacuation plans.
The flood map shows how inland seawater might rise in the worst-case scenario. The evacuation map shows where people who evacuate the tsunami can go to ensure their safety. Read more about the areas affected by Humboldt County and the tsunami regions here.
Sacramento – The California Geological Survey (CGS) today released two maps of tsunami hazards in Humboldt County. One of them shows potential tsunami inundation – how far inland seawater could reach in the worst-case scenario. The other map shows where the suspended tsunami evacuees must go to ensure their safety
“We are updating the inundation maps for 2009 to reflect improved knowledge of potential hazards,” said state geologist Steve Bohlin.
“We have new scientific information and better computer modeling which has led to better predictions about whether the earthquake will create a tsunami or not, and which path one can take. This new information can help local governments and emergency response providers update their community evacuation plans.” .
Some communities have produced their own evacuation maps in the past, but this is the first time that CGS has been directly involved in creating them and making them available on a central website.
“Local government officials across the state asked for our help in creating it, and we worked closely with local authorities on the evacuation map in Humboldt County,” said Rick Wilson, head of the CGS tsunami program. The cities and the county decided where to draw the lines of evacuation zones. It is an important tool in the event of a tsunami. “
In addition to working with Humboldt County, CGS collaborated with a representative of the local governor’s office for emergency services, the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group, the Eureka National Weather Service, and in map development.
Engineering geologist Jason Patton, who investigated evidence of prehistoric tsunamis in Humboldt Bay on his master’s degree at Humboldt State University, led this mapping project for CGS and is now working on maps for Del Norte County.
In general, evacuation maps guide people to bypass a specific street or known landmark to ensure their safety. In Humboldt County, some areas of the towering sand dunes of the Samoa Peninsula have been identified as safe areas.
“We cannot guarantee that all sand dunes and canyons will be safe in all tsunamis in southern Samoa,” Wilson said.
“As for Eureka itself, people usually have to move a few blocks inside to get to the evacuation area. That sounds relatively easy within 10 minutes, but the concern is that if a large earthquake happened offshore, there could be a lot of damage to the streets and roads,” Live power lines are down, crushing people trying to get away from the ocean as fast as possible, so it might be tough. ”
Tsunami is an uncommon but legitimate threat in California. More than 150 tsunamis have struck the California coast since 1800. Most of them are small – sometimes barely noticeable – but nearly a dozen have caused significant deaths or damage, the most recent being during the March 11, 2011 tsunami from Japan.
The most devastating tsunami struck California on March 28, 1964. The Crescent City was hit by heights of 21 feet four hours after a 9.2 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska. Ten people died and half of the business district on the waterfront was destroyed.
A major earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone – the 700-mile undersea boundary where two tectonic plates collide – could have a major impact on the northern coast. Scientists have evidence that the subduction zone in the 1700s caused an earthquake and tsunami of magnitude 9, and a similar event could send altitudes over land as high as 50 feet toward Crescent City and 30 feet along the outer coast of Humboldt Bay and the Eureka region. A large earthquake in Cascadia’s massive submersion fault may cause shaking for five to six minutes and give people along the coast a maximum of 10 minutes to reach the evacuation zone.
“It’s not out of the question for a major earthquake there in the next 100 years,” Wilson said. “This is the most damaging scenario for the area north of Cape Mendocino. A large earthquake from the Subduction Zone in Cascadia could cause waves twice the size of the 1964 event, especially in Crescent City.”
In the next few months, CGS will release updated maps for other counties, including Del Norte, Alameda, and Los Angeles counties.
“We hope that the entire coast will be modernized within two years,” Wilson said.
Immersion or evacuation maps are not organizational. But CGS is working with an advisory committee to develop tsunami area mapping to guide local land use planning under the Seismic Hazard Mapping Act.
CGS is currently generating area maps for several secondary earthquake hazards, helping to ensure public safety and reduce economic impacts.
