A 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Kathmandu, its epicenter in China; The tremors were felt in Bihar

A strong earthquake shook Kathmandu early on Tuesday morning (January 7, 2025). The earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale was recorded by the National Seismological Center at 6.50 am and the tremors were also felt by residents of Madhubani in Bihar.

The epicenter of the earthquake was the city of Dinghe in China, according to the center.

The quake was also felt in the neighboring districts of Kavripalanchowk and Dhading. People ran out of their homes due to panic in Kathmandu.

But there have been no reports of any damage so far as a result of the earthquake.

Earthquakes and a series of aftershocks also shook the areas around Lobuchi, Nepal, in the high mountains near Mount Everest.

“It shook strongly here, and everyone is awake, but we don't know any damage yet,” said government official Jagat Prasad Bhosal in Nepal's Namchi district, which is located near Mount Everest.

An earthquake strikes the holy city in Tibet, China

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Tibet's holiest cities on Tuesday morning, damaging buildings around Shigatze and sending people fleeing into the streets in neighboring Nepal and India, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

The report added that the earthquake occurred at 9:05 am (0105 GMT) and its epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers, which is an adjustment to the strength of the earthquake from 6.9 magnitude earlier.

Collapsed storefronts can be seen in a video showing the aftermath of the accident from the nearby town of Lats, with debris strewn on the road.

Reuters was able to confirm the location from nearby buildings, windows, road layout and signage that matched satellite images and street photos. The date could not be independently verified.
