A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Tibet's holiest cities, damaging buildings around Shigatse and sending people fleeing into the streets in neighboring Nepal and India, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

Official media said that 32 people were killed in the earthquake that occurred at 9:05 a.m. on Tuesday and its epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Xinhua News Agency, citing the regional disaster, said: “32 people were confirmed killed and 38 others injured during the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County in Shigazi City in Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet) at 9:05 a.m. on Sunday. Tuesday”. Relief headquarters.

Temperatures in Dingri are around minus 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit) and will drop to minus 18 degrees this evening, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

Collapsed storefronts can be seen in a video showing the aftermath of the quake in the nearby town of Lats, with debris strewn on the road.

Reuters was able to confirm the location from nearby buildings, windows, road layout and signage that matched satellite images and street photos. The date could not be independently verified.

The tremors were felt in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, 400 kilometers away, where residents fled their homes.

The earthquake was also felt in the northern Indian state of Bihar, bordering Nepal. As the walls shook, people rushed from their homes and apartments into open areas.

Officials in India said that so far there have been no reports of any damage or loss to property.

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake is considered strong and capable of causing severe damage.

The southwestern parts of China are frequently exposed to earthquakes. A huge earthquake struck Sichuan Province in 2008, killing nearly 70,000 people.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, 29 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher have occurred within 200 kilometers of the Shigatse quake in the past five years, all of which were smaller than the quake that struck Tuesday morning.

In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Kathmandu in neighboring Nepal, killing about 9,000 people and injuring thousands in the country's worst earthquake.
