Climbers capture a video of a mountain collapsing after an earthquake in Idaho

A relatively mild earthquake in Idaho last week did some serious damage to an area popular for hiking and climbing. The Baron Spire, located near Stanley, Idaho, encountered the worst of it, and it appears that a large portion of the summit collapsed, causing a landslide that was captured by the camera by nearby climbers.

The video is absolutely stunning and shows the massive landslide that starts from the top of the mountain and travels to the ground below. The video shows a lot of emotion on the part of the climbers who were apparently recently in the area where the landslide occurred.

The shots include a whole lot of insults, shouting, and general overbearing when it comes to sound.

It’s funny to hear the onlookers react the way they did, but as someone said over and over again, they could easily have died if they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I suppose their reactions are to be expected and I cannot say I would behave differently.

Even slight vibration can break large chunks of rock, and it often has a ripple effect, causing more and more material to decompose as it falls down the mountain.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake is significant, but far from the type of devastating event feared in populated areas along fault lines, such as in California. However, it appears that it was enough to cause the summit of this rocky structure to collapse, and fortunately no one was there when that happened.

In this case, climbers seem to have managed to get out and have plenty of time to spare, but it’s still a spooky sight to see the area you’ve been exploring covered in fallen rocks and dust. It goes without saying, but the area is probably off limits to explorers at this time and it may take some time before any outdoor adventurer decides to climb the mountain again.
