A strong earthquake kills dozens in western China

BEIJING – A powerful earthquake killed at least 53 people in Tibet on Tuesday and left many others trapped as dozens of aftershocks rocked western China and across the border in Nepal.

Another 62 people were injured, Xinhua News Agency, citing the regional disaster relief headquarters, reported.

The Ministry of Emergency Management said about 1,500 fire and rescue workers were deployed to search for people under the rubble.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and was relatively shallow at a depth of about six miles. China recorded a strength of 6.8.

The epicenter was about 50 miles northeast of Mount Everest, which straddles the border. The region is seismically active and is where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide and cause Himalayan uplifts powerful enough to change the heights of some of the world's highest peaks.

The average elevation in the area surrounding the epicenter is about 13,800 feet, the China Earthquake Networks Center said in a social media post.

CCTV said there were a few communities within three miles of the epicenter, which was 240 miles from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and about 14 miles from Shigatse, the region's second-largest city, known as Shigaze in Chinese.

About 140 miles away in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, the quake woke up residents and sent them out of their homes and into the streets. No information was immediately available from the remote mountainous areas of Nepal closest to the epicenter.

The US Geological Survey said that 10 earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 6 on the Richter scale occurred in the area struck by Tuesday's earthquake over the past century.
