Tibet earthquake kills at least 95 people – DW – 07/01/2025

Dozens were killed after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Himalayan region on Tuesday morning, and dozens were injured.

Local Chinese media reported that at least 95 people were killed in and around the city of Shigatze in Tibet, while the tremors were felt by residents of neighboring Nepal and India.

“A reporter learned from the Earthquake Bureau of the Tibet Autonomous Region that people had died,” the Xinhua News Agency reported, referring to the towns of Changsu, Kulu and Kugu in Dingri County.

The agency later added that “95 people were confirmed dead and 130 others were injured.”

Where was the epicenter of the Tibet earthquake?

The quake occurred at 9:05 a.m. local time (0105 UTC/GMT) and was centered at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Xinhua revised the magnitude of the quake downward from a previous estimate of 6.9.

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake's magnitude reached 7.1.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 75 kilometers northeast of Mount Everest, which straddles the border between China and Nepal.

Aftershocks have been reported

The Xinhua correspondent added that by 10 a.m., “multiple aftershocks” had been recorded, the largest of which reached a magnitude of 4.4.

China Central Broadcasting Corporation said, “Dingri County and its surrounding areas witnessed very strong tremors, and many buildings near the epicenter collapsed.”

The Ministry of Emergency Management said that about 1,500 emergency workers were already on hand to search for victims and survivors under the rubble.

Video footage seen by Reuters showed destroyed buildings and collapsed storefronts in the large towns of Shigazi and Latsa, with debris scattered on the roads.

The holy city of Shigatse is the seat of the Panchen Lama, one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism, whose spiritual authority is second only to the Dalai Lama.

Tremors were felt in Nepal and India

The tremors were felt in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, about 400 kilometers away, where residents fled their homes.

“We felt a very strong earthquake but so far we have not received any report of injuries or physical losses,” said Anuj Raj Ghimire, chief official of Solukhumbu district in Nepal.

“We have mobilized police and other security forces as well as local residents to collect information about the damage,” he added.

Residents of the northern Indian state of Bihar also felt the tremors, but officials did not report any signs of damage.

Why is the region prone to earthquakes?

The area is seismically active and is located where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide, creating Himalayan uplifts that could alter or even form some of the tallest peaks in the world.

Although earthquakes are common in the mountainous region, Tuesday's quake was the strongest earthquake recorded within a 200-kilometer radius in the past five years, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed about 9,000 people and struck Nepal in 2015.
