The holy city of Shigatze in Tibet is hit by a deadly earthquake

The death toll rose after a strong earthquake occurred near the Tibetan city of Shigatze, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.

On Tuesday, an earthquake occurred near Shigatse, one of Tibet's holiest cities and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism.

The Chinese authorities said that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8, and that it killed at least 126 people and injured at least 188 others.

The authorities added that hundreds of homes were destroyed.

Rescue teams are treating victims following the earthquake

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the rural province of Tengri in Tibet, which borders the Himalayas and is located about 80 kilometers north of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

Buildings shook in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan and India, but no casualties have been reported so far.

The region is often exposed to earthquakes caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Shigatze City, where the earthquake occurred, is home to Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.

Traditionally, the Panchen Lama holds second place in spiritual authority after the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama fled his homeland in 1959 after it was seized by China, while the Panchen Lama remained. Belief in reincarnated lamas, or spiritual leaders, is a distinctive feature of Tibetan Buddhism, which developed in the region in the 7th century.

Speaking after the disaster, the Dalai Lama said he was deeply saddened.

“I pray for those who lost their lives, and I wish a speedy recovery for all those injured,” he said.
