An earthquake 50 miles from Mount Everest leaves at least 126 dead in Tibet

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake centered about 50 miles from Mount Everest reportedly killed at least 126 people in Tibet on Tuesday.

Another 188 people were injured on the Chinese side of the border, the Associated Press reported, citing Xinhua News Agency.

Rescue workers climbed piles of broken bricks, and some used ladders, in severely damaged villages, while the search for survivors continues. More than 1,000 homes are believed to have been damaged in the area.

Videos posted by China's Ministry of Emergency Management showed two people being carried on stretchers by workers walking over uneven rubble from collapsed homes.

The morning quake also woke up residents in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu — about 140 miles from the epicenter — and sent them running out of their homes and into the streets.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and was relatively shallow at a depth of about six miles. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Tengri County, Tibet.

About 50 aftershocks were recorded in the three hours after the quake, and the scenic Mount Everest region on the Chinese side was closed, according to the Associated Press.

More than 3,000 rescuers have been deployed to the area to help with disaster relief, the news agency quoted CCTV as saying.

State media added that about 7,000 people live in three towns and 27 villages within 12.5 miles of the epicenter on the Chinese side. The average elevation in the area is about 13,800 feet, the China Earthquake Center said in a social media post.

In the southwestern tip of Kathmandu, a video seen by the AP showed water flowing into the street from a pond in a courtyard with a small temple.
