At least 95 dead after 7.1 magnitude earthquake near Mount Everest: reports
At least 95 people have been killed and 130 others injured after an earthquake struck western China.
On Tuesday, January 7, at around 9:00 a.m. local time, the earthquake struck the holy city of Shigatse in Tibet, according to the BBC.
The Associated Press reported that several aftershocks affected “the high-altitude region in western China and across the border in Nepal.” The BBC reported that parts of India also felt the tremors.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake's magnitude at 7.1 and about 10 kilometers (6 miles) deep, but several local outlets including China Daily and China Central Television (CCTV) listed it as 6.8.
According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred “near Shizhang, China, as a result of a normal fault at a shallow depth north of the boundary between the Eurasia and India plates.”

The Associated Press reported that 1,000 homes were damaged in the quake, with more than 130 people injured, citing the Tibet Earthquake Relief Headquarters and state media.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping ordered “maximum efforts to be made to treat the injured,” according to CCTV, which reported that he “also urged efforts to prevent secondary disasters, properly resettle affected residents, and effectively deal with the after-effects of the incident.”
The scenic Mount Qomolangma (Everest) area on the Chinese side was closed after the quake, according to the AP and China Daily. The Associated Press reported that the quake's epicenter was about 50 miles northeast of the world's tallest mountain.
According to China Daily, a staff member in the area stated that tourist vehicles planning to visit “have stopped working,” Fengmian News quoted, adding that they “will be reopened based on the situation after the aftershocks.”

The 4.4 magnitude earthquake was the strongest aftershock felt to date, the outlet reported, citing Xiaoxiang Morning News.
The BBC reported, citing an official at the National Emergency Operations Center who spoke to BBC Newsday, that although aftershocks were felt in Nepal, “no major damage or losses” were reported except for “minor damage and cracks in “Houses.”
