Tibet earthquake leaves centuries-old monastery unscathed

A 15th-century monastery in Tibet remains intact after a deadly 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook the northern slopes of Mount Everest.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Shigatse, one of Tibet's most important historical cities, earlier today. At least 126 people were reported killed, and 188 others injured. More than 1,000 homes were also damaged in the area near the Himalayan border with Nepal. There were several additional aftershocks.

It is unclear how many people will be left homeless as a result of this natural disaster, as low temperatures add difficulties to rescue missions. More than 2,500 police officers were sent to assess the damage and search for victims.

Shigatse is home to Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded by Gedun Drupa, the first Dalai Lama, in 1447. Today, it is the seat of the Panchen Lama, the second most important figure in Tibetan Buddhism (after the Dalai Lama). One of the four major monasteries associated with Tibetan Buddhism.

The monastery is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Comprising six main halls in 3,000 buildings, it was once home to up to 5,000 monks and lamas.

Inside the building, Jampa Church contains a statue of Jampa, who is believed to be the future incarnation of Buddha who returned to save everyone on Earth. The 85-foot-tall statue is plated with gold and took more than 900 craftsmen nearly four years to complete. No damage has been reported to the monastery so far.
