More attacks on women since Vanuatu earthquake – Police Chief

Violence against women has increased in Vanuatu after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake destroyed the country's capital, Port Vila, last month, police said.

The country's National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) recently expressed concern about gender-based violence in the wake of the December 17 tragedy, which left 14 people dead and 265 others injured.

Vanuatu Police Inspector Kami Tua said the Family Protection Unit had responded to nearly 50 cases of assault, mostly against women, and about 10 other cases of gender-based violence since the earthquake.

“We have seen an increase in gender-based violence on our records at the moment. Attempted rape, indecent assault especially on young women, as well as cases of one person punching another person.”

The inspector has just estimated that reported cases of violence in the country have increased by at least two percent.

He added that there is also a great deal of theft in the country.

Many people in Port Vila have lost their homes and jobs and have been unable to purchase basic items.

“People are going around stealing other people's property.

“After the damage caused by the earthquake in the central area, the main town, many people are out of work because businesses are closed.”

The National Disaster Management Office had previously announced that 1,473 people had been displaced from their homes and 80,000 people were affected.
