The Tibet earthquake displaced about 61,500 people

At least 61,500 people were displaced after a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Shigazi in China's southern Tibet region, state media reported on Thursday.

The earthquake, whose epicenter was in the town of Zugu, Dingri County in the Xizang Autonomous Region, the local name for Tibet, struck at 9.05 a.m. local time (0105 GMT) on Tuesday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

At least 126 people were killed and more than 188 injured, in addition to damage to private and public property.

The Chinese Earthquake Agency said the region had been hit by a total of 1,211 aftershocks since Tuesday.

The earthquake destroyed more than 3,600 homes, while about 14,000 search and rescue personnel were deployed with the help of People's Liberation Army soldiers to rescue people.

Amid the freezing temperatures, special tents and kitchens were set up for the displaced in Tibet, known as the Roof of the World.

Beijing said the Chinese government launched a second-level emergency service in response to the disaster and all damaged roads were repaired and opened to traffic.

Electricity and communications services have also been restored in the area.

China also thanked foreign governments and international organizations for their solidarity over the disaster.

In India, hundreds of exiled Tibetans gathered in Dharamshala in the northern province of Himachal Pradesh, in a candlelight vigil to express their solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that struck Tibet.

A similar event with prayers was held in Leh district of the Ladakh region in the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir on the border with China.
