A collection of photos shows hopes on the earthquake-hit Noto Peninsula
A photographer known for documenting wars and natural disasters has released a collection of images that reflect the strengths and hopes of survivors of the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
The book is titled “Noto o Musubu” (Link Noto) and was published on December 23. It contains 100 photographs taken by Atsushi Shibuya in Suzu, Wajima and other hard-hit areas in Ishikawa Prefecture.
“I want to create a place through this publication where we can consider the future of Noto together,” Shibuya said.
A 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook Ishikawa Prefecture, especially the Noto Peninsula, on January 1.
The next day, Shibuya headed to Noto, accompanied by a medical team from the Japanese Red Cross Society. But the roads were cut off, making their progress difficult.
“It seemed so far away anyway,” he recalls.
Shibuya headed to an isolated community with members of the Self-Defense Forces so he could listen to local residents.
“They all told me they were completely fine, compared to those who were in a much worse situation,” Shibuya said. “However, their behavior showed that they had been struggling to survive for several days, gripped by stress and anxiety.”
Shibuya came across a woman trying to pass by a rock on a road in the Oritomachi district of Suzu. Carrying gasoline and canisters on her back, the woman said she was transporting them to the nearby Takayamachi area.
“She was trying to navigate an area that even SDF vehicles would find difficult,” Shibuya said. “I felt an urgent desire to understand the strong-willed nature that I felt in her.”
Shibuya visited the affected area seven times between his overseas assignments. He made a point of giving copies to the subjects of his pictures.
“My mission as a lensman is to connect individuals separated by distance through my book,” Shibuya explained. “Instead of just taking pictures of the ruins, I would like to honestly convey the hopes of the people who are dedicated to protecting this beautiful land.”
“Noto o Musubu” sells for 4,180 yen ($27), including tax, on Amazon as well as in bookstores across Japan.
A special photo exhibition will be held at Gallery Nine in the Kita-Aoyama district of Tokyo's Minato district from January 7 to 12.
The exhibition will be held from January 26 to February 2 at Kenshin Gallery in the Minamicho district of Kanazawa.
Entrance to both places is free.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
