The death toll from the Tibet earthquake rises on the third day of the search for survivors

BEIJING (Reuters) – China nearly doubled the number of people injured in the devastating Tibet earthquake as rescuers on Friday expanded their search for survivors in a remote area near the Himalayan foothills despite fading hopes of survival.

The state-backed Global Times newspaper said the 6.8-magnitude quake injured 337 people, the first increase since Tuesday's initial estimate of 188, although the death toll remained at 126.

It is not yet clear how many people are still missing, but more than three days later, experts say those trapped under the rubble likely died of hypothermia.

Average nighttime temperatures in the area range from minus 10°C to minus 15°C (14°F to minus 5°F), at this time of year, except for wind chills.

More than 1,600 aftershocks had rocked the disaster area as of Friday, making it more difficult to move more than 47,000 affected people to temporary shelters.

“Make sure you don't leave anyone behind!” That was the headline of a report in the state-run Tibet Daily newspaper that said a senior regional official in China's ruling Communist Party took action less than half an hour after the quake.

The earthquake represents the most serious disaster to hit Tibet in years, and presents the authorities with the challenge of quickly rescuing those still trapped, finding the bodies of the dead, and sheltering tens of thousands of displaced people.

Party Secretary Wang Junzheng visited the worst-hit villages in the epicenter of the earthquake in Tengri County.

“The elderly held Wang Junzheng's hands, touched his forehead according to Tibetan custom, and shed tears,” the newspaper said.

He added that many grassroots cadres, including local Tibetan officials, joined the relief efforts to sift through the rubble and guard the resettlement sites, despite the collapse of their homes.

China's official Xinhua news agency said Xi met with senior ruling party officials “to study and arrange disaster relief operations.”

“Efforts must be made to ensure a decisive victory in this difficult battle,” the report quoted senior leaders as saying, urging faster rebuilding and improved resilience.

Authorities must also find long-term housing for tens of thousands of displaced people, beyond warm tents, while ensuring a steady supply of daily necessities.

The government has sent 743,000 tons of goods such as grains, cooking oil, meat and vegetables to the region, and the Ministry of Commerce said another 2,000 tons of frozen pork and 1,600 tons of frozen beef and mutton are ready for delivery.
