“Sussex Earthquake” found in southeast England false alarm – Famagusta Gazette

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake that allegedly hit the English Channel near the Sussex coast in southeast England on Thursday morning was confirmed to be a false alarm.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported an earthquake at 0800 GMT on Thursday, saying the quake struck at a depth of 7 km and fell into the channel 35 kilometers south of Camper and less than 50 kilometers from Eastbourne, London. The Evening Standard based newspaper reported.

However, the British Geological Survey disputed the report, and EMSC later deleted the reference to a tremor in the English Channel, according to the newspaper.

“This was an automated response from EMSC that has since been deleted. The BGS data confirm that there has been no earthquake. EMSC is pushing their data before reviewing it,” the Evening Standard quoted a British Geological Survey spokeswoman as saying.

The earthquake reportedly occurred at a depth of 6.4 km below the earth’s surface.

Last year, Sussex was hit by an earthquake when a tremor measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck Gatwick on May 4.
