Australia sends $11 million in support to Vanuatu after earthquake

Vanuatu will receive an additional $10 million (NZ$11 million) from Australia as the Pacific island nation continues to recover from a massive earthquake.

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17 killed 14 people, injured more than 200 others, and displaced thousands.

Most of the funds will focus on the education, health and transport sectors, in line with the priorities of the Vanuatu government.

A federal government statement on Saturday said they would be delivered through local systems in a bid to promote long-term sustainability.

The Australian assistance aims to help Vanuatu respond to future disasters and support vulnerable groups including women, children and people with disabilities.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said support was needed for Vanuatu to recover after the tragic effects of the earthquake.

“Australia and Vanuatu have a deep and enduring partnership. We are family and we will always be there for Vanuatu in times of need,” she said.

The funding injection follows a $7 million (NZ$7.7 million) humanitarian aid package from Australia for the initial earthquake response in Vanuatu.

This package included emergency supplies, funding for humanitarian partners, and the deployment of medical assistance teams and a disaster response team.

Relief efforts faced major challenges due to road closures, traffic congestion, and limited communications networks during the recovery period.

A potential health crisis also looms as aid workers believe about 20,000 people will not have access to clean water for weeks after the quake.

Brecht Momin, a UNICEF water, sanitation and hygiene specialist based in Vanuatu, warned that shortages could cause the disease to spread.

Nearly 700 Australians had to be evacuated from Vanuatu to Brisbane Airport in 10 RAF battles before Christmas.
