Dehradun: The recent 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Tibet earlier this week has raised concerns about the possibility of a major earthquake in Uttarakhand. However, experts say they are unable to predict the exact time and location of its occurrence.

Geologist Naresh Kumar of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology said the Himalayan region, which includes Uttarakhand, is vulnerable to earthquakes due to regular friction between the Indian and Eurasian plates. “The Indian plate is slowly moving northward, resulting in an accumulation of energy,” he said.

Kumar said that most of the earthquakes witnessed in the Himalayan region were the result of this friction between the Indian and Eurasian plates. When underground rocks fail to withstand the energy pressure, they break and release energy, causing an earthquake, he said.

“Earthquakes continue to occur after a certain period of time. The stronger the earthquake, the more likely it is that it will occur for years. If a larger earthquake, i.e. a magnitude 8 earthquake, occurs somewhere, there is a possibility of a larger earthquake occurring after about 80 to 100 years,” Kumar explained.

He added that the entire Himalayan region falls under seismic zones 4 or 5, which means the risk of earthquakes always remains high. “This is also the reason why there is a possibility of an earthquake in Uttarakhand region as well,” Kumar said.

Scientists have been studying the Himalayan region and the pattern of earthquakes in this region for many years to understand the possibility of future earthquakes. The entire region, known as the Indo-Tsangpo region, is about 2,500 kilometers long and 150 kilometers wide.

After the latest earthquake that struck Tibet on Tuesday (January 7), the National Seismology Center recorded several tremors in nearby areas, which experts said indicate a continuous release of energy.
