Throughout history, January 12 has seen some big moments.

In 2010, Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake that left more than 300,000 dead.

On this day in 1991, the US Congress voted to authorize then-President George H. W. Bush to wage war on Iraq in order to liberate Kuwait.

In 2006, 364 pilgrims died in a stampede while throwing stones at Jamarat in Saudi Arabia.

In 2021, the Supreme Court of India ordered a temporary stay on the three farm laws in Rakesh Vaishnav v. Union of India & Ors.

Haiti earthquake causes death and destruction

The earthquake that struck Haiti occurred on January 12, 2010, 25 kilometers southwest of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

The tremor, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, caused widespread death and destruction.

This was followed by two aftershocks of magnitude 5.9 and 5.5.

About three million people were affected by the earthquake, or a third of the country's population.

More than a million have been left homeless.

Ultimately, the Haitian government estimated the number of casualties at more than 300,000 people.

A decade and a half later, Haiti has still not fully recovered.

The US House of Representatives votes in favor of war on Iraq

It was 1991. President George H.W. Bush was in office.

The previous year, Saddam Hussein's Iraq invaded its oil-rich neighbor, Kuwait.

Now the eyes of the world are focused on the United States, and on Congress in particular.

The final vote came after days of fierce debate, with a majority of 250 votes and 183 votes in favor of war.

The United States would go on to unleash a devastating, surprise attack on Iraq – the first war ever broadcast live on cable television to millions in America.

After only five weeks, Kuwait was free and Hussein was humiliated.

Tragedy during Hajj in Saudi Arabia

In 2006, more than 300 people were killed and about 1,000 others injured in Mecca.

This is after the last day of stoning the Jamarat became deadly.

Tens of thousands of pilgrims had passed by the Jamarat, the three large stone walls representing Satan and at which pilgrims stoned.

SC keeps farm laws at centre

In January 2021, the Supreme Court issued an interim stay on the Centre's three farm laws.

Parliament had passed the three farm laws in September 2020.

The three laws that have been enacted are the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; (Farmers Empowerment and Protection Agreement) on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

However, farmers, especially in Punjab and Haryana, have started protesting against these laws.

Meanwhile, multiple petitions challenging the laws have been filed with the Supreme Court.

Then, on January 12, 2021, the Supreme Court stayed the farm laws.

The then Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said the court would set up a committee to examine farmers' grievances.

“We are of the view that setting up a committee of experts in the field of agriculture to negotiate between farmer bodies and the Government of India may create a conducive atmosphere and improve the confidence of farmers… The order said that stopping the implementation of all the three farm laws for the time being may alleviate the hurt feelings of farmers and encourage them to sit at the table.” Negotiate with confidence and good faith.

Although the court set up a committee to help the farmers and the Center reach an agreement, the farmers did not participate in the discussions.
